Dr JL Dube High School – Sun International
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Sun international and New Africa Collaboration brings much needed Science laboratory and resources to Dr JL Dube High.
Dr J.L Dube high school was established more than 30 years ago and named after one of the ANC founders John Langalibalele Dube. Dr J.L Dube high is one of the largest schools in Kwa Mashu and has an enrolment of more than 1 300 learners each year catering to learners from poverty stricken homes with limited resources.
The school had a great need for a science laboratory which was a dream said Principal Mr Magwaza. This dream soon turned into a reality when Sun International and New Africa stepped in and provided a much needed Science laboratory to the school. Mr Magwaza advised that it was the schools intention to increase the Science stream and the provision of much-needed resources will make their task a lot easier now.
In 2013 the school produced a learner who scored 100% in Physical Science and went on to represent the school at National level where he was ranked 3rd in the Country. It is hoped that many more learners will follow in these footsteps and make Dr JL Dube High a centre of excellence for Science studies.
There has been a huge amount of negative publicity recently regarding the performance of South African learners in Mathematics and Science, South Africa has been ranked last in this field, however through interventions such as these and by providing learners with the best possible resources we can certainly make huge strides towards improving the results of our learners” said Ahmed Motala CEO of New Africa education Foundation.
Under the management of Sibaya Casino’s Corporate Social Investment committee a decision was taken to fund this project .A good education is founded on the premise that the environment be conducive to the practice of learning. It should be able to make available to learners the infrastructure, facilities and resources necessary for learning. Sadly, in South Africa the legacy of our past does not always render this basic fundamental a reality. All too often we find that our country’s schools – especially those serving the historically disadvantaged or today’s lower income groups – do not measure-up. Many fall short in terms of both infrastructure and the provision of the tools necessary to give effect to efficient teaching and effective learning and we hope that our contribution is a small step to making an improvement said Cheryl-Ann, who is part of the CSI committee at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom.
